Juntos Los Jueves

March 1, 2010

“Juntos Los Jueves” Project

What Is It?

“Juntos” is a weekly project conducted throughout the school year and part-time in the summer for homeless families, which includes a free dinner and activities that promote family communication, and health as well as academic achievement for students. The City of Santa Fe Children and Youth Commission and the Brindle Foundation fund this project, with assistance from McKinney-Vento, Domanica Foundation, Santa Fe Community Foundation, McCune Charitable Foundation, Santa Fe Downtown Rotary Club and Title 1 funds.

Each week, we provide food for the weekend from Food for Santa Fe, free books and clothing and numerous resources, referrals and other types of assistance through a family advocate who is also a licensed social worker. Fine Arts for Children and Teens provide art classes for the children, while Juntos parents attend classes on improving their lives, financial literacy, life skills and parenting classes. All events and materials are bilingual.

Who Benefits?

Any family from any school whose children are registered with the ADELANTE Program is invited to attend.

When Does It Happen?

Juntos begins in October and continues through July, with less sessions during the summer. Please call us to find out the location and times.

  • Ask your friends, congregation, class or civic group to join you in volunteering for our weekly evening program, Juntos los Jueves. You can cook and serve a meal for the participating families, or help with clean-up, child care and the art class for children.
  • Organize a drive at your place of work, place of worship, gym, school or elsewhere, to collect: food, winter jackets in children’s sizes, children’s books, school supplies, new children’s shoes or underwear, socks, school uniform clothing in excellent shape or funds for the ADELANTE Program.
  • Volunteer to help ADELANTE Program by organizing our food pantry, our storage sheds, our children’s books/gifts, or help before the holidays by making phone calls or organizing the food we distribute.
  • Send a donation to Partners in Education Foundation (please write “ADELANTE” in the memo) at: PIE Foundation, 1300 Camino Sierra Vista, Room 109, Santa Fe, NM 87501. Your tax deductible contribution will assist us in helping to prevent students’ families from being evicted or having their utilities disconnected; help pay for field trips, gas cards, food cards, special project materials for school, special activity fees; provide deposits to get a family off the street and other necessities for homeless children.

We welcome your questions about these or any other ideas you might have to support services to and promote the well being of students, children, youth and families experiencing homelessness.

Call us at 467-2571 or 467-2524.

Many thanks for your interest in improving the quality of life for all of our community’s children and youth!
